About the project

The Sharek Youth Forum is one of the leading independent, apolitical and impartial youth organisations in Palestine. Sharek is today a national and internationally recognized platform for youth-to-youth, youth-to-community, and youth-to-children interaction. Sharek have extensive experience in targeting university and college graduates and providing them with capacity building, career counselling, vocational education and skill development sessions related to their specific academic specialisation.

All recent data indicates high rates of poverty and unemployment in Palestinian society in general and among youth in particular. More than one third of Palestinian youth are unemployed, with the highest unemployment rate among young people after higher education.  The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics reports that 25.7% of Palestinians lives in poverty, relative poverty or deep poverty, and nearly one quarter of Palestinian youth are classified as poor.

Sharek Youth Forum report the following five main causes of youth unemployment among Palestinian youth: poor economic performance, gender inequality, exclusion from entrepreneurial opportunity, education and training and barriers created by the system.  

There are three main parts of the Sharek programme:

1. The ‘Palestine Through Graphics’ workshop, which supports young people to improve their English communication competencies through illustrations and short story telling.

2. The Sharek Summer Camp, which involves volunteers in training local youth (current beneficiaries on the Tammayz project) improve their ICT and Advocacy skills through extra-curricular intensive workshops over 3-4 weeks.

3. Voice of Youth International Outreach: This is an advocacy tool providing young Palestinians with a platform to raise awareness of their struggle under occupation, to voice opinions on significant issues, and to celebrate Palestinian culture. Young people trained in podcast production, including script-writing  interview techniques, audio editing.
